How Can I Make WordPerfect My Computer's Default Program for Also Opening Word Files?

The buttons and links that open Word documents in TexasBarBooks' digital downloads open those documents in whatever default program your computer designates for Word files. To make the buttons and links launch those files in WordPerfect instead of Word, change the default program for Word files on your computer to WordPerfect. This may be accomplished a number of different ways, depending on the computer.

Notes: See the cautions about MS Word forms opened in WordPerfect. Also, changing your computer's default program for opening a specific type of document to WordPerfect will change that default for all files of that type, whether they are opened from a TexasBarBooks digital download, opened as attachments to emails, or opened on that same computer in any other way.

The two most common methods for changing the default program for opening a specific file type follow:

  • Changing your default program using Windows Explorer or My Computer

    1. Using Windows Explorer or My Computer, navigate to and open a folder that contains one or more Word files, for example, any TexasBarBooks digital downloads' "Source_files" folder.

Note: If a TexasBarBooks digital download includes Word documents but doesn't contain a "Source_files" folder, try the "Forms" folder or its equivalent. See how the various products are organized here.

    2. Without opening the files inside that folder, single-right-click over one of the Word file names.

Note: TexasBarBooks Word forms are saved as "Word 97-2003" documents (with the file extension ".doc"). For the best results, single-right-click a Word file of this type.

    3. In the menu that appears, hover your mouse pointer over the "Open with" option.

    4. Another menu should appear next to that one. In that menu, select the "Choose default program . . ." option.

    5. The "Open with" window should open. Inside that window, select WordPerfect as the default program, and ensure that the check box labeled "Always use selected program to open this kind of file" or its equivalent is checked.

    6. Click the "OK" button. It's possible that the highlighted/selected file will open in WordPerfect. If it does and you don't need this document at the moment, simply close the file. You should also notice that the icons for Word files on your computer have changed from Word icons to WordPerfect icons.

  • Changing your default program using the Default Programs utility

    1. Click the "Start" button on your computer's task bar. This button is usually at the bottom left corner of your screen.

    2. In the right pane of the "Start" menu, select the "Default Programs" menu item. If this selection is not available, instead select the "Control Panel" option, and in the window that opens, select the "Default Programs" option.

    3. In the "Default Programs" window, select the "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" option or its equivalent.

    4. In the list of file types/extensions that appears, scroll down to and select (highlight) the ".doc" option.

    5. Click the "Change program . . ." button.

    6. The "Open with" window should open. Inside that window, select WordPerfect as the default program and click the "OK" button.

Note: TexasBarBooks Word forms are saved as "Word 97-2003" documents (with the file extension ".doc"). If you would like to also change the default program for the "Word Document" type of file (designed for Word 2007 and later, with the extension ".docx"), repeat the preferred above process for that file extension.
